I wasn't always a fan of baseball. In fact, it took moving to Mexico to make me appreciate the sport. In mid-90s I was living in Mexico City with a fellow Gringo and Mexicophile Tom Buckley. Tom is an avid fan of baseball and Mexico. When he suggested that we go to stadium, it took some convincing. Then he reminded me there was beer and good food. I was hooked.
Mexico has 16 professional baseball teams, divided into 'North' and 'South' divisions. The season begins in March and concludes in August. At the midpoint of the season, the All-Star Game is played. In 2013 the extravaganza takes place in Oaxaca City, home of the Guerreros, aka Warriors.
For baseball fans, watching games in Mexico is not unlike watching minor league games in the USA.
Mexico Baseball Background @ Tom Buckley
The Mexican Baseball League continues to struggle with growing the game in a soccer-mad country. The league office has made a concerted effort to modernize marketing strategies, everything from instructing its teams how to use social media to better connect with fans to helping with creative on-field local promotions as well as league-wide promotions.
TV exposure is limited and the prospects for improvement are slim when you consider that the two national public broadcasters own two top-tier soccer teams each. The league did enjoy several seasons on ESPN Deportes but this season baseball fans would have to fork over money to buy a satellite dish to get their fill of Mexican League games.
This season, the league is going all out to set a new attendance record after drawing over 4 million fans last season. The clubs seemed to get off to a wonderful start as the league set an Opening Day attendance record (175,909 for an average of 10,994 per game) but it is no great surprise that numbers have dropped dramatically since. Through 14 games, average attendance is already down to 6,004 per game. Monterrey leads the way with an average of 16,161 through 7 home games while Tabasco is averaging only 2,575 fans through 10 home games (Oaxaca is third worst, at 3,365 fans per game through 7 home games and the Guerreros had the second-fewest Opening Day fans at 6,041). Saltillo is No. 2 in average attendance through April 9 (9,025 through 4 home games) and Mexico City is No. 3 (8,739 through 7 home games).
The league seemed to get hit somewhat by the global economic crisis in 2009 and recovery has not been steady. A cursory examination of data shows that attendance dipped in certain stadiums in 2010 and 2011. This was surprisingly true for the Mexico City Diablos Rojos, perennially a league favorite along with the Monterrey Sultanes. These two teams annually vie for the league lead in attendance, but Diablos officials were stunned by a down year last year (See Chart #1 below).
These figures would have to be studied more closely because a good argument could be made that Diablos attendance suffered when the league decided to limit regular season play to conference games only, presumably in an interest to save on travel expenses. However, that meant that the infamous Guerra Civil (Diablos Rojos vs. Tigres) could only occur in the playoffs. Regular season games between these bitter rivals often draw over 15,000 fans since both clubs were formerly based in Mexico City. The Guerra Civil was reinstated for the 2011 regular season.
